Installing the Demonstration Software
To use the demonstration software, insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive and complete the following eight steps:
1. Choose a version of the demonstration software: Open either the Power Macintosh Demo or Macintosh Demo folder and select the folder for the language you want to use.
2. Drag the folder to the computer hard drive.
3. Open the Drag Contents to System Folder folder on the CD; open the folder for the language you want to use; then open either the Macintosh (68K) or Power Macintosh folder.
4. Open your System folder. Drag the Type Libraries folder onto the Extensions folder in your System folder.
5. Close your System folder. Drag QuickTime and the other remaining files onto your System Folder icon. Important: If you already have a copy of any of these files installed, an alert will display, asking if you want to replace the existing copy of the file. If the installed version of any file is newer than the version on this CD-ROM, do not replace the installed version with the version from this CD-ROM.
6. If you are using a PowerPC processor-based Mac OS computer, verify that the AppleScriptLib file is either in the Extensions folder in your System folder or in the same folder as the demonstration version of QuarkXPress. (An AppleScriptLib file is included in each Power Macintosh version QuarkXPress Demo folder — drag it to the Extensions folder in your System folder if you don’t already have a copy there.)
7. After installing, restart your computer.
8. Open the folder on the computer’s hard drive containing the demonstration software and double-click the QuarkXPress application icon. QuarkImmedia will be loaded when you launch QuarkXPress.
Limitations of the Demonstration Software
This demonstration copy of QuarkImmedia works with the demonstration copy of QuarkXPress and is fully functional except for the following limitations:
• Projects and documents cannot be saved.
• Up to five project pages may be printed, and the words “QuarkXPress Demo” will print across each page.
• The Open Project and Open URL actions are unavailable.
• If you use the Export command (QuarkImmedia menu), the project’s complexity is limited to 10 objects, 10 interactive text strings (Hot Text panel in the QuarkImmedia palette), 5 scripts, and 5 pages. If you use the Export command with projects that exceed this complexity, an alert message will state, “This document is too complex for the demo version of QuarkImmedia to allow the export process to continue. There are too many objects, scripts, or pages.”
About QuarkImmedia Viewer
QuarkImmedia Viewer is a stand-alone application that lets you interact with QuarkImmedia projects over the Internet or on a local CD-ROM or hard disk. You don’t need QuarkImmedia or QuarkXPress to view and interact with projects created with QuarkImmedia.
Important
To use QuarkImmedia Viewer to view projects over the Internet, you need an Internet connection. You must also have a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address; this can either be a permanent IP address, or a “dynamic” IP address that is temporarily assigned to your computer each time you connect to the Internet.
Once you have QuarkImmedia Viewer installed (see “Installing the Demonstration Software” above), you can use the following URL (Uniform Resource Locator) to connect to a Web site created using QuarkImmedia:
http://www.quark.com/immedia
Using QuarkImmedia Viewer
After you install QuarkImmedia Viewer, double-click on its icon to launch the application. Choose View –> Show Internet Controls to display the QuarkImmedia Internet Controls palette if it is hidden. To connect to a Web site created using QuarkImmedia, type http://www.quark.com/immedia in the Visit field, or press the Home button in the QuarkImmedia Internet Controls palette, and press Return.
To quit out of a project, type Command-Q or F15.
To improve the performance of QuarkImmedia Viewer, select the application icon in the Finder; choose Get Info from the File menu; and increase the memory allocation for the program.
Making QuarkImmedia Viewer work with your HTML browser
QuarkImmedia Viewer can work harmoniously with a compatible HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) browser. (Currently, Netscape Navigator is the only known HTML browser that is compatible with QuarkImmedia Viewer.) In order to do so, though, both applications must be configured properly. First configure QuarkImmedia Viewer to launch a compatible HTML browser when encountering files other than QuarkImmedia projects:
1. Choose Edit –> Preferences –> Internet to display the Internet Preferences dialog box.
2. Click Specify (next to WWW Browser) to display the Select a Browser directory dialog box.
3. Select your HTML browser and click Open.
To open QuarkImmedia projects from an HTML browser, QuarkImmedia must be set up as a helper application. Then, the HTML browser can automatically hand off QuarkImmedia projects to QuarkImmedia Viewer. To configure your HTML browser:
1. Display the browser preferences dialog box.
2. Create a new entry in the list of helper applications.
3. Give the new entry a MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) type of “application/immedia” or, if applicable, a MIME type of “application” and a MIME subtype of “immedia”.
4. Give the new entry an extension or suffix of “imd”. If applicable, give it a “description” of “QuarkImmedia”.
5. Use the Browse button to locate the QuarkImmedia Viewer application.
6. Choose or enter a File Type of ODOC.
7. Indicate that you want to launch QuarkImmedia Viewer when a QuarkImmedia project is encountered. (If you do not make this specification, the browser may simply try to save the project to your hard disk.)
Important note to America Online and CompuServe users
To use QuarkImmedia Viewer to view projects over the Internet, you need a permanent IP address or Internet access through an Internet provider that supplies you with a “dynamic” IP address while you are connected to the Internet. At this time, America Online does not provide this service. If you are a CompuServe customer, check out their new CompuServe TCP service.
